Another retirement announcement! The cycling world is witnessing yet another departure as Amund Grondahl Jansen, a seasoned rider with previous stints at Visma, Jayco AlUla, and Uno-X Mobility, has decided to hang up his racing wheels ahead of the 2026 season.
The number of cyclists stepping away from the professional circuit before the upcoming season is on the rise, and Jansen, who previously held the title of Norwegian national road race champion, has now publicly confirmed the end of his professional journey.
Jansen, who dedicated the entirety of the 2025 season to Uno-X Mobility, shared his retirement news via an Instagram post. Accompanying a video of himself enjoying a skiing trip in the mountains, he wrote:
"Things you couldn’t do as a professional cyclist. That’s as good a retirement announcement as any, I suppose. Preparing for new goals in 2026, getting stuck in with numbers pinned in 6 weeks from now already! Guess where."
After being released by Uno-X Mobility at the end of October, Jansen's brief return to a team from his homeland lasted only one season. With no new contract in sight and his own words solidifying his decision, he officially concludes his time in the professional cycling arena at the age of 31.
From National Champion to WorldTour Domestique
Turning professional in 2017, Jansen began his career with LottoNL-Jumbo, which later became known as Team Jumbo-Visma. During his time there, he became an integral part of their support structure, particularly during sprints and classic races. He participated in multiple editions of the Tour de France, contributing to lead-out trains for riders like Dylan Groenewegen and providing crucial assistance to general classification contenders such as Primoz Roglic.
His most significant personal achievement came in 2019 when he captured the title at the Norwegian national road race championships. Just over a week later, he celebrated another major victory with a stage win at the ZLM Tour in the Netherlands. Despite these highlights, much of his professional career was characterized by a supportive role, where he was appreciated for his strength on flat and rolling terrains and his dependability in high-pressure team situations.
Following his tenure with Jumbo-Visma, he transitioned to the Australian team that evolved into BikeExchange, and subsequently Jayco AlUla; however, his progress was continually hampered by serious health issues. Notably, he faced complications with his femoral artery, necessitating multiple surgeries. These challenges not only restricted his racing opportunities but also placed him among a concerning roster of athletes affected by similar health conditions.
His last competitive season unfolded in 2025 with Uno-X Mobility, marking a return to a Scandinavian initiative at the WorldTour level. This experience, though promising, turned out to be fleeting. With no prospects for continuing into 2026, his Instagram post has ultimately confirmed what many had anticipated.
For a racer whose career was characterized more by dedication to his team than individual accolades, Jansen leaves the sport with a commendable legacy. He departs as a former national champion, a multiple-time Tour de France competitor, and a domestique valued by some of the leading teams and riders of his era.
