The International Cricket Council (ICC) has labeled the pitch used for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as "unsatisfactory," designating it as the least favorable Test pitch globally in nearly two years. This rating comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding the pitch's condition, particularly as Australia's coach Andrew McDonald appealed to Cricket Australia (CA) not to overly influence pitch preparations.
In a detailed report presented by match referee Jeff Crowe, it was determined that the MCG wicket heavily favored bowlers during England's win, which seemed more about salvaging pride than showcasing competitive cricket. Throughout the two-day match, wickets fell with alarming frequency—one approximately every 23 deliveries—and notably, it marked the first Test in 73 years held in Australia where no batsman managed to score over 50 runs.
As a consequence of the swift conclusion of the match, the MCG received one demerit point. However, this is unlikely to have significant repercussions, as it would require accumulating six points over five years before the ground could be barred from hosting international matches.
Financially, the quick finish is estimated to cost Cricket Australia upwards of $10 million due to ticket refunds for a completely sold-out day three, alongside considerable sales for day four.
This "unsatisfactory" evaluation represents the second-lowest tier on the ICC's four-level rating system and is the first of its kind since South Africa's two-day victory over India in January 2024.
James Allsopp, CA's chief of cricket, expressed disappointment on behalf of fans who had planned to attend days three and four, stating his concern for the millions of cricket enthusiasts both in Australia and globally who were eager to witness the match. He lamented that the pitch did not uphold the traditional balance between bat and ball that the MCG is renowned for.
Allsopp did commend the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) staff for their exceptional efforts in producing high-quality Test match pitches in recent years. He expressed confidence that they would provide excellent surfaces for next year’s Boxing Day Test against New Zealand and for the highly anticipated 150th Anniversary Test against England in March 2027.
The MCG’s disappointing rating follows a stark contrast with the Perth pitch, which received the highest rating of "very good" after also concluding in under two days. This situation marks a notable occurrence, as it is the first time in 129 years that a single series has featured multiple two-day Tests.
Todd Greenberg, the CEO of CA, indicated that the governing body might intervene to prevent a repeat of this season, emphasizing that short Tests are detrimental to their business model.
Historically, Australia's ground curators have operated with a degree of autonomy, tasked with imparting unique characteristics to their local venues as part of a broader strategy. McDonald voiced concerns about the potential need for specific surface requests, asserting, "I don’t want to reach a point where we are dictating tailored pitches. To my knowledge, Australia has never gone down that path."
In defense of head curator Matt Page, McDonald acknowledged the challenges he faces and praised his success in transforming the MCG from one of Australia’s dullest pitches. Page, who came from the WACA after the MCG received a "poor" rating when only 24 wickets fell across five days during a lackluster draw in 2017, has not overseen a drawn Test at the venue since then.
The curator enjoys strong backing from Stuart Fox, the MCC's chief, and the two appeared together at a crowded press conference recently. Prior to this summer, the MCG had achieved a "very good" rating for each of the last three seasons.
McDonald remarked, "Such occurrences can happen from time to time, but we stand behind him and take pride in the progress made at the MCG. We want to ensure he continues to feel supported, so we don’t regress to our previous issues. He has maintained a successful equilibrium for an extended period. While we believe our batting lineup is stronger than what was displayed, the results suggest otherwise."
