A third patient has vanished from Cumberland Hospital, sparking urgent concern and a police search. This comes just days after two other patients escaped and were implicated in the deaths of three people. But here's the shocking part: this isn't an isolated incident. The hospital is now under scrutiny as it faces a formal investigation.
Madan Pandey, 25, was last seen on Saturday morning, walking away from the hospital wearing a black T-shirt and shorts. The police have appealed to the public for help in locating him. Pandey's disappearance is particularly worrying as he may be at risk, and his whereabouts are unknown.
This case follows two recent, tragic incidents involving escaped patients from the same hospital. Setefano Mooniai Leaaetoa, 25, allegedly stabbed three people in Merrylands, resulting in one death and two critical injuries. Just ten days prior, he had been in the care of Cumberland Hospital's mental health unit but escaped during a transfer. In a separate incident, 31-year-old Luke Peter Francis is accused of causing a fatal car crash in Camden, killing two people. Francis had escaped from the hospital a week before.
The frequency of these escapes is alarming. Data reveals that patients are three times more likely to abscond from Cumberland Hospital than any other mental health facility in the state. On average, one patient escapes every 1,333 days at Cumberland, compared to every 4,348 days at other acute mental health units in NSW.
The hospital's security and patient care practices are now under intense scrutiny. Could more have been done to prevent these escapes and the subsequent tragedies? The investigation aims to find answers and ensure such incidents are not repeated.
As the search for Pandey continues, the community is urged to keep an eye out and contact the police with any information. This story raises important questions about patient safety and the challenges faced by mental health facilities. What do you think? Are these incidents preventable, and if so, how?
