Just days before this interview, a nationwide survey conducted by Talker Research for Current.com revealed a starkly different reality for most Americans. A staggering 90 percent of U.S. citizens believe the country is grappling with a cost of living crisis. Furthermore, 80 percent of those surveyed felt that the prices of everyday consumer goods have actually increased since President Trump took office in January 2025. This directly challenges the notion of a booming economy for the average household.

The same study uncovered some concerning financial struggles: 52 percent of respondents admitted they are not able to pay their monthly bills on time, and an equal number are finding it difficult to afford even basic necessities. The impact on people's lives is profound, with 38 percent reporting they've had to relocate because they can no longer afford to live in their previous homes. For 64 percent, the dream of living in their ideal location has been put on hold indefinitely due to financial limitations.
President Trump's confidence in his economic stewardship also seems to be at odds with public opinion. A separate poll from NPR/Marist/PBS News indicated that 59 percent of U.S. adults disapprove of his handling of the economy, with only 36 percent in favor. This significant gap between the President's perception and the public's sentiment raises questions about who is truly benefiting from the current economic landscape.
Adding another layer to this complex picture, President Trump cited a GDP growth figure of 5.6 percent in his NBC interview. However, official data from the Department of Labor shows an annualized growth rate of 4.4 percent for the third quarter of 2025. While a White House official clarified that the President might have been referring to a projection from the Atlanta Federal Reserve (which was still 5.4 percent), it's important to note that the U.S. economy hasn't seen quarterly growth exceeding 5 percent since 2021, a period of recovery post-Covid-19 lockdowns.
